Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is an organic sulfur compound that is a vitamin-like antioxidant. It is also known as lipoic acid (LA) and thioctic acid. It consists of 2 enantiomers: R-lipoic acid, which is also found in the body, and the man-made version, S-lipoic acid.
Alpha lipoic acid acts as a free radical scavenger and can support the elimination of foreign substances . In particular, shearing metals such as lead, mercury, copper, iron and platinum are released from their binding to sulphur-containing proteins and chelated via their thiol groups. It helps the body rid itself of toxic heavy metals and supports normal blood sugar. ALA is used to reduce the neurodegenerative effects of diabetes.
